Registration FAQs

The answers below address the most common questions we get from students registering for classes at BSU.

What is my BSU ID number (TechID)?

Your BSU “TechID” is an 8-digit number that was assigned when you applied to BSU. If you do not have a TechID, or have misplaced it, you can call BSU Records at 218-755-2020 to retrieve it. You’ll need your BSU TechID to create your StarID through http://starid.minnstate.edu/. Your TechID can also be found on your e-Services dashboard.

If you would like a BSU Student ID card, please complete the ID card request form here.

I don’t know or can’t remember my MyBSU username or password – how do I find that?

Logging in to MyBSU requires your StarID and StarID password. Your StarID password can be reset by following the “Forgot Password” link on the MyBSU login page. Check out this quick video from the BSU HelpDesk on how to get logged in.

Where do I get a registration access code?

Degree-seeking students need an registration access code each semester (except summer session). Contact your faculty advisor each semester for your access code, and to talk about upcoming course selections, your major, and career opportunities.

When I try to register for a class, I get an error message that I have a “hold”. What should I do?

The message should state what type of hold you have:

Business Office hold: Contact the Cashier’s Office, Deputy 202, or call 218-755-2045 for clarification of the financial hold and instructions on what you must do to have the hold removed.
Admissions hold: Contact the Admissions Office, Deputy first floor, or call 218-755-2040 for clarification of the admissions hold and instructions on what you must do to have the hold removed.
Sexual Violence Prevention Training (SVPT) hold: Contact the Office of the Health Education Coordinator in Cedar Hall, or call 218-755-2080.
Health Services hold: Submit evidence of current immunization records to Health Services in Cedar Hall, or call 218-755-2053 for more information. Submit the immunization form on this web page: http://srmk.cp55586.com/admissions/undergraduate/accepted-students/immunization/

When I try to register for a class, I get an error message that a student program is required. What does this mean?

This means you are trying to register for a course that requires you to be admitted to a certain program, such as Professional Education, Graduate Studies, or Extended Learning. Please contact the appropriate department for information on criteria for being admitted to the program.

How do I obtain permission to register for a course that is full or requires instructor permission?

Contact the instructor of the course to request permission to add. If permission is granted, the instructor will do an override on the registration system. Once the override has been done, you must then add the course through the registration system.

I would like to audit a course or take it as P/NP, but the registration system won’t let me. What should I do?

In order to change the grading method for a course, you will need to submit an academic petition or letter to the Records Office by the deadline each semester. Courses required for your major, minor, emphasis, or liberal education requirements must be taken for a letter grade. Please refer to the undergraduate catalog for other restrictions that may apply.

How do I obtain permission to take an overload of credits?

You are restricted from taking more than 18 credits if your GPA is less than 3.00. Contact your advisor to request permission to have this restriction waived. If permission is granted, your advisor will do an override on the registration system. Once the override has been done, you may then register for more than 18 credits.

How do I obtain permission to drop a course?

Drops can be done through the registration system (see academic calendar for last day to drop). Instructor permission is not required to drop a course.

I am unable to drop a course due to a Business Office hold. What can I do?

Contact the Cashier’s Office at Deputy 202, or by calling 218-755-2045 for clarification of the financial hold and instructions on what you must do to have the hold removed.
